Henk van de Pol won Global Champions Tour

Henk van de Pol has won the competition for the rankings to the Global Champions Tour. He rode with his horse Rhodos a flawless barrage and was more than five seconds faster than the number two, German Marco Kutscher with Cornet Obolensky. Ben Maher was third with Robin Hood W.

Henk van de Pol was first to go and Rhodus flashed through the finish in 35.49 and no-one else even got close to catching him. “Rhodus is a naturally fast horse” said Henk, “so I did not need to make a plan to go this way and he certainly seems to like the grass arena. This is my first time here and I am certainly enjoying it so far, the facilities are great and the town is also nice.” This was the horse’s third win on the tour after he scored in Arezzo and Valencia.

Henk van de Pol wins in Valencia

Henk van de Pol has won in Valencia the Trofeo Massimo Dutti with Rhodos. 12 horses were clear in the first round to make an exciting jump off. Four had gone to each record at least four faults before the USA’s Laura Kraut jumped completely clean on her veteran Anthem. However Laura’s lead was short lived when Henk Van de Pol was the next in and absolutely set Rhodos alight as he had done when the combination won in Arezzo. To gasps and cheers from the crowd he stopped the clock in an astonishing 32.9, a full three seconds faster. Only Marco Kutscher (Cash 63) and Jos Landsink (Amour du Bois) left the rails all intact there after but were not even a danger to Laura’s position let alone Henk’s.

Henk van de Pol speeds to Global Champions Tour victory

Course designer Uliano Vezzani might have under-estimated the quality of the competitors in the second contest as 19 of the 42 starters were clear in the first round. The course had contained three up to height (1.50) doubles and a water jump so should have posed more of a problem but the riders obviously had their mounts well tuned.

In the jump-off, second to go Jos Lansink set a 37.58 standard on Spender that did enough to ensure a few people made silly mistakes while being beatable by the brave.

It was, however the last six to jump that really set the arena alight. Well known for his flying jump-off skills, Gianni Govoni rode like a man inspired and did not take a single pull on Joyau d'Opal in a fashion that would have looked more at home in the Grand National.

Then it was left to the remaining five to catch him. Australia's Edwina Alexander pushed Isolav Socrates to the limit but still could not quite succeed, stopping the clock in 35.25.

It was left to Dutchman Henk van der Pol, the very last to go, to rob Italy of a famous home win. His 15-year-old chestnut gelding Rhodes responded to every call made of him, took an absolute flyer at the last but their bravery paid off when the clock stopped at 34.36 and the €8250 prize was theirs. "I knew I had to take a stride out going to water the water which we managed so then I knew I was OK to take a slight pull to the double and it all worked," said a relieved Henk afterwards.
